Character
Bombays are often warm, confident companions that participate actively in family life. Many seek laps and warm places, learn retrieving games and respond strongly to social attention. Long daily isolation is a poor match. Provide a compatible companion when the household is often away, while retaining individual retreats. Reward calm behaviour and give children clear rules about lifting and allowing the cat to leave.
Care and exercise
The short black coat is easy to maintain with a soft brush or cloth. Check skin, ears and teeth at the same time. Extra fat can hide beneath the compact muscular outline, so feel the ribs and waist and measure meals. Daily climbing, hunting games and food puzzles keep body and brain active. Offer safe warmth while shielding radiators and direct sun.
Health and choosing a breeder
The American Bombay shares ancestry with the Burmese. Ask about DNA tests for GM2 gangliosidosis, WNK4 hypokalaemia and Burmese head defect where relevant, plus family records of HCM and breathing. Breeders should explain blood groups and neonatal isoerythrolysis risk. A compact head must not cause narrow nostrils, noisy breathing or watering eyes. Choose health and genetic diversity over the darkest possible colour.
