Character and environment

Bohemian Rex cats are generally described as calm and people-oriented. A predictable home may suit them better than constant commotion, but they still need daily play, climbing and choice. Provide low steps if jumping is difficult and do not assume withdrawal is simply a placid character. Pain, breathlessness or overheating can also reduce activity and require veterinary attention.

Coat and face

The long curly coat can mat tightly against the skin. Comb in layers every day, checking armpits, belly and trousers, and teach grooming without force from kittenhood. Keep facial folds and eyes clean according to veterinary advice. Constant tearing, noisy breathing, inability to sleep with a closed mouth or poor heat tolerance are not normal breed details but signs that the face is not functioning adequately.

Health and choosing a breeder

Persian ancestry makes PKD, HCM, eye disease and brachycephalic consequences important. Ask for PKD DNA results or kidney scans, repeated heart ultrasound and eye examination, plus information about difficult births. Dutch law prohibits breeding harmful physical traits. Choose demonstrably free breathing, open nostrils, a visible nasal bridge and normal jaws and teeth. A rare curly coat never justifies an excessively short muzzle.
