Temperament

Balinese cats are closely related to the Siamese and normally share its strong need for company and communication. They follow their people, learn to open puzzles or doors and often announce when something is missing. Anyone seeking a silent, highly independent cat may be a poor match. Reward desired behaviour, offer several short play sessions and gently expose kittens to normal household sounds, visitors and care. A compatible feline companion is often valuable when the household is away for part of the day.

Grooming and environment

The silky semi-long coat has little woolly undercoat and usually mats less than a heavy long coat. Weekly combing, with attention to armpits and hindquarters, is often sufficient. Mental enrichment takes more time: high climbing routes, food puzzles, retrieving and clicker games help prevent boredom. Keep the cat lean and monitor teeth and gums because dental pain can remain hidden. A secured balcony or cat enclosure can provide changing stimulation without traffic, loss or theft risks.

Health and choosing a breeder

Progressive retinal atrophy, HCM and hepatic amyloidosis occur in Siamese-related lines. Ask for appropriate PRA DNA and eye results, repeated heart ultrasound and liver or kidney disease among relatives. No DNA test excludes the risk of hepatic amyloidosis, so family history remains important. A clear result for one variant never removes every inherited risk. Avoid extremely elongated or underweight cats and prioritise easy movement, clear vision and stable behaviour. A good breeder also explains honestly how much company this social breed needs.
