Character

Australian Mists were developed as companion cats and many seek people out readily. They can be playful and curious without operating at maximum speed all day. Individual differences still matter: let the cat initiate contact and provide separate retreats. Calm introductions can make children and other pets a good fit. A second cat helps only when temperaments match and the home has enough separate resources.

Care and activity

The short coat has little undercoat and is normally maintained with weekly brushing. Use the session for skin, ear and dental checks. Offer several daily play periods, food puzzles and vertical routes. Some Mists have a strong appetite. Measure food, feel the ribs regularly and track weight. A calm appearance is no reason to restrict movement.

Health and choosing a breeder

The breed is young and small outside Australia, so firm claims that inherited disease is absent are not sufficiently supported. Ask about relationships, longevity and diagnoses in parents, grandparents and earlier litters. Discuss repeated HCM ultrasound, eye examination and any DNA tests relevant to Burmese, Abyssinian or domestic lines used. A good breeder explains results in context and prioritises stable behaviour and genetic spread over rare colour or markings.
