Character and company
Asians are usually clever, expressive cats that become closely involved in household life. They follow people, learn quickly and may vocalise clearly when interaction is missing. A home left empty for many hours each day is less suitable unless a compatible companion and sufficient attention are available. Alternate retrieving, food puzzles and brief training sessions and also provide high, quiet sleeping places.
Care
The smooth short coat needs little more than gentle weekly brushing. Give greater attention to teeth, body weight and muscle condition. Daily running and climbing keep an energetic cat from creating its own entertainment with furniture. The body should be muscular rather than heavy. Check teeth regularly and calmly habituate a kitten to tooth brushing, nail checks, the carrier and veterinary visits.
Health and choosing a breeder
Because of the close Burmese relationship, WNK4-related hypokalaemic polymyopathy and other family risks are relevant. Ask for appropriate DNA results, blood type information and records of weakness, FOPS, diabetes and heart disease among relatives. A carrier can be used responsibly when the mating cannot produce affected kittens. Retaining safe genetic diversity is better than automatically removing every carrier. Ask the breeder to explain the exact mating plan.
