The American Wirehair shares many traits with the American Shorthair: generally even-tempered, sociable without demanding constant attention and playful between clear rest periods. Offer interactive play, a high lookout and a choice between company and privacy every day. An adult may manage a predictable working day, but prolonged boredom is unsuitable. Introduce children and other animals step by step.

The unusual coat

The wiry hairs result from a spontaneous mutation. Hard brushing or frequent washing can break hairs and irritate skin. Remove loose debris with fingers or a soft comb. Check for redness, scale, bald patches and itching. Whiskers may curl too. Because whiskers support distance judgement, orientation and communication, short, brittle or absent whiskers should not be dismissed as a harmless cosmetic variation.

Health and choosing a breeder

The breed is rare and some registries still permit American Shorthair outcrosses to preserve diversity. Ask about inbreeding, heart disease and skin complaints in the family and repeated HCM ultrasound where relevant to the line. A breeder should show that both parents move freely, hear normally and have functional whiskers. The unusual coat is not hypoallergenic. Personal contact matters when allergy influences the decision.
