Temperament

American Shorthairs are generally stable, friendly cats that appreciate attention without always demanding a lap. Their background as functional farm cats remains visible in alertness, hunting games and a substantial build. With careful introductions, many live comfortably with children, cats and cat-friendly dogs. Even a sociable cat needs choice and a high private resting place. An adult may manage a normal working day, but daily interaction, play and predictable care remain essential.

Grooming and activity

The dense short coat usually needs weekly brushing and a little more during seasonal shedding. Weight management is more important: a broad chest belongs to the type, while ribs that cannot be felt and a missing waist indicate excess fat. Use measured portions, food puzzles and at least two active play periods each day. A tall scratching post, secure window view and toys that imitate prey support natural behaviour. Check nails, ears and mouth and introduce tooth brushing while the cat is young.

Health and choosing a breeder

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy occurs in some lines, and excess weight increases risks such as joint disease and diabetes. Ask about repeated heart ultrasound by a veterinary specialist and heart disease or sudden death among close relatives. An HCM DNA result or one normal examination cannot exclude HCM developing later. Choose free breathing, easy movement and a curious temperament. Do not accept the claim that an exceptionally heavy cat is automatically a better example of this robust but athletic breed.
