Temperament

American Curls are usually people-oriented cats that enjoy participating in ordinary family life. Many remain playful into old age, learn simple retrieving or food-puzzle games and live well with respectful children and other cats. A social reputation does not mean every Curl wants to be held. Let the cat initiate contact, provide high observation points and practise brief periods alone. A compatible second cat can offer company, but does not replace daily play and attention from the owner.

Grooming and environment

The short or semi-long coat has little undercoat and is generally manageable with weekly brushing. Never pull or straighten the distinctive ears: the firm cartilage can be damaged. The curl can reduce ear movement, while a narrow canal may retain debris and encourage inflammation. Check for redness, odour, scratching or head shaking and ask a veterinarian to assess problems. Never probe deeply into the ear. Daily climbing, hunting games and food searches help maintain condition, alongside sturdy scratching surfaces and a quiet retreat.

Health and choosing a breeder

No DNA test guarantees a healthy American Curl. Ask about ear inflammation, narrow canals and cardiac or eye disease in the family, and inspect both parents' ears. The Dutch keeping ban for folded-ear cats does not automatically cover a backward curl, but breeding from a harmful physical trait remains prohibited. A tight or malformed ear must therefore never become a breeding goal. Avoid promises of a “perfect” curl and choose only a breeder who puts normal ear function and genetic diversity above ear grade or rare colour.
