An explorer at height

Abyssinians often investigate every opening and prefer watching from the highest available route. Many engage closely with people without becoming passive lap cats. Provide stable floor-to-ceiling climbing, changing puzzles and several daily hunting games. A compatible active cat can be useful company, but introductions and separate resources matter. Secure outdoor space protects both the cat and wildlife while offering more varied stimulation.

Routine care and activity

The short ticked coat needs only gentle weekly brushing, leaving most daily effort for activity and social contact. Check teeth, claws, knees and body condition regularly. Lean appearance should still include good muscle and normal movement. Because boredom can produce disruptive exploration, rotate safe toys and teach food-search or clicker tasks. Respect rest and handling preferences rather than expecting endless entertainment from an active individual.

Health and choosing a breeder

Useful DNA tests exist for pyruvate kinase deficiency and progressive retinal atrophy. Patellar luxation, hip dysplasia and eye examination also deserve attention. Ask explicitly about renal amyloidosis, kidney failure and longevity among older relatives because a standard DNA panel cannot exclude amyloidosis. Review both parents' original results and ask how carriers are paired without discarding valuable genetic diversity. Select a kitten that moves freely, sees clearly and was socialised at home.
