Colic means abdominal pain and ranges from mild to immediately life-threatening. A horse that merely becomes quiet and stops eating may need help as urgently as one that rolls. Call your vet as soon as you suspect colic.

## Recognise changes

Look for reduced appetite or droppings, flank-watching, pawing, repeated lying down, sweating, altered breathing or an unusual posture. Report when signs started, the last feed and manure, and recent changes in food, medication, exercise or housing.

## While waiting

Follow veterinary instructions. Do not give oil, laxatives or human medication. Gentle walking is only appropriate when advised and safe; do not exhaust the horse. Prevent injury without putting yourself between a distressed horse and a wall.
