Two five-kilogram cats can have very different body conditions. Combine monthly weighing with a hands-on body condition check: ribs should be easy to feel under a light covering, with a visible waist behind them.

## Count the whole ration

Weigh food with kitchen scales and include treats, training rewards and food given by other family members. Energy needs commonly fall after neutering, so reassess portions early. In multi-cat homes, feed separately if one animal steals food.

## Never crash diet a cat

Rapid or complete food restriction can cause dangerous fatty liver disease. Ask a vet to set a target and rate of loss, especially when diabetes, pain or other illness is present. Unexpected weight loss or muscle loss also needs investigation even if the scale still shows a “normal” number.
